Malaysia National Pharmacy Chain
Project Overview
The retail pharmacy sector in Southeast Asia is undergoing a radical shift from traditional dispensaries to high-end “Health & Beauty” lifestyle destinations. In Malaysia, where urban consumers are increasingly focused on wellness and premium skincare, the physical store environment has become a critical tool for brand differentiation. The HealthCare Plus project represents the pinnacle of this new retail paradigm. Runda Rack was commissioned to engineer a specialized display solution for 20 new flagship outlets across Kuala Lumpur and Penang. The objective was to create a retail infrastructure that balanced the clinical requirements of a pharmacy with the aesthetic sophistication of a luxury beauty boutique. By deploying a custom-engineered Steel-Glass Hybrid System with integrated precision lighting and anti-bacterial surfaces, we enabled HealthCare Plus to achieve a 22% increase in sales and a 30% improvement in their “premium brand” consumer rating. This case study details the technical innovations and design strategies that allowed a national leader to redefine the pharmacy experience.
The Client & Market Context
HealthCare Plus is one of Malaysia’s largest and most respected national pharmacy chains, with a network of hundreds of neighborhood stores. However, with the entry of international beauty giants and the growth of e-commerce, the client identified a need to create a “Flagship” tier of stores. These outlets would be located in high-traffic premium malls and would focus on high-margin dermatological skincare and luxury wellness products. The Malaysian market is characterized by a high demand for “clean,” hygienic retail environments that reflect the medical authority of the pharmacist while providing an inviting, boutique-like atmosphere. For HealthCare Plus, the challenge was to move away from the “functional but cold” metal racking of their standard stores and move towards a design that felt “airy,” “transparent,” and “premium,” without compromising on the extreme durability and ease-of-cleaning required for a healthcare setting.
The Challenge (Technical & Operational)
The HealthCare Plus flagship project introduced a series of complex technical and structural challenges that required a bespoke engineering response.
First, the requirement for High-Cleanliness and Chemical Resistance was paramount. Pharmacy environments are subjected to intensive cleaning protocols using medical-grade disinfectants and anti-bacterial agents. Standard retail powder coatings are often porous and can be degraded by these chemicals over time, leading to surface pitting and bacterial entrapment. The shelving needed a surface treatment that was non-porous and “clinically smooth” to ensure 100% hygiene compliance.
Second, the Aesthetic Integration of Steel and Glass was a major structural hurdle. To achieve the “premium beauty” look, the client requested tempered glass shelving insets within a minimalist steel frame. However, glass is inherently brittle and heavy. We needed to engineer a “Cushioned-Mount” system that could support the weight of the glass and the products (up to 40kg per shelf) while protecting the glass from the vibrations and impacts of a high-traffic retail floor.
Third, High-Precision “Cool-Touch” Lighting was required for temperature-sensitive SKUs. Many high-end cosmetic and pharmaceutical products are sensitive to heat and UV radiation. Traditional shelf lighting can cause “hot spots” that degrade the active ingredients in expensive serums or change the consistency of medical creams. Runda Rack needed to engineer a lighting system that provided extreme clarity and color accuracy while generating zero radiant heat on the product surfaces.
Finally, the Logistical Scale of the 20-store rollout was a major operational constraint. Each flagship store had a unique floor plan, but the client required 100% uniformity in the look and feel of the custom fixtures. We needed a “Modular-Custom” approach that allowed for site-specific adjustments without diverging from the national brand standard.
The Engineering Solution
Runda Rack’s engineering team developed a Custom Hybrid Steel-Glass Pharmacy Ecosystem, incorporating several first-to-market technologies for the Malaysian region.
Anti-Bacterial Nano-Powder Coating: We developed a specialized “Arctic-White” finish for the steel frames, incorporating silver-ion technology within the powder coating matrix. This nano-coating provides continuous anti-microbial protection, inhibiting the growth of 99% of bacteria and fungi on the shelf surfaces. The finish is also “Hyper-Smooth,” reducing the surface tension to ensure that cleaning agents can be wiped away completely without leaving residue in micro-pores.
“Silent-Grip” Glass Integration: For the display zones, we utilized 10mm low-iron tempered glass with polished edges. These were integrated into the steel frames using proprietary “Silicone-Inlay Brackets.” These brackets provide a 2mm thermal and vibration buffer between the steel and glass, ensuring that even if a heavy item is dropped on the shelf, the impact is absorbed by the frame rather than the glass. This system allowed us to maintain a “frameless” look while achieving a structural load rating that exceeded international standards for retail glass.
Advanced LED Optical Logic: We engineered a “Total-Internal-Reflection” (TIR) lighting system built into the shelf brackets. This system utilizes high-CRI (98+) LEDs that are physically separated from the product zones by an aluminum heat-sink and a specialized polycarbonate diffuser. The diffuser is engineered to block 100% of UV radiation and 95% of infrared (heat) radiation, ensuring that the light reaching the pharmaceutical products is “cold.” The 5000K “Daylight” spectrum was chosen to provide a clinical, high-clarity environment that makes small labels easy to read.
Modular “Pod” Construction: To manage the 20-store rollout, we designed the shelving as a series of “Independent Pods.” Each pod consists of a self-supporting steel frame that can be configured with various combinations of glass shelves, metal drawers, or pegboard panels. These pods were pre-wired and pre-assembled in our factory, allowing for a “Plug-and-Play” installation on-site. This reduced the store fit-out time by 50% and ensured that every outlet met the exact same quality standard, regardless of the local contractor.
Business Impact & ROI
The transformation of the HealthCare Plus flagship network has delivered a dramatic improvement in both brand perception and financial performance.
Sales Performance: The flagship stores reported a 22% increase in sales during the first quarter post-renovation. This growth was particularly concentrated in the “Dermo-Cosmetic” and “High-End Wellness” categories, where the premium display environment significantly increased the average transaction value.
Brand Equity and Market Positioning: Customer surveys conducted across the 20 sites showed a 30% increase in the “Premium Store” rating. HealthCare Plus successfully repositioned itself from a “utility pharmacy” to a “wellness destination,” allowing them to successfully compete with international beauty retailers for the first time.
Operational Efficiency and Hygiene: The anti-bacterial nano-coating and the “Seamless-Joint” design reduced the time required for daily shelf cleaning by 35%. Store managers reported 100% success rates in national health and hygiene audits, with zero instances of fixture-related contamination.
Reduced Inventory Spoilage: The “Cool-Touch” lighting system has resulted in a 90% reduction in heat-related product damage for sensitive skincare lines. This has saved HealthCare Plus an estimated $120,000 annually in reduced inventory write-offs across the 20 flagship locations.
Sustainability & Future Proofing
Sustainability was integrated through the use of high-recycled-content steel and energy-efficient LED logic. The “Modular Pod” design is inherently sustainable, as it allows HealthCare Plus to re-use their fixtures even if they relocate a store in the future. The Runda Rack system is also designed for long-term scalability. The integrated data-paths in the steel frames are already prepared for future upgrades to “Smart-Pharmacy” technologies, including digital health-consultation screens and electronic shelf labels that can display real-time stock levels.
The “Universal Frame” design ensures that as the Malaysian healthcare market evolves — for example, towards more personalized medicine or digital health services — the pods can be easily reconfigured with different functional inserts without requiring structural modifications. This inherent flexibility ensures that the HealthCare Plus Flagship Network will remain at the cutting edge of the Asian health and beauty market for the next 20 years.
