Project Overview

The intersection of heritage tailoring and modern retail engineering reached a new pinnacle with the Savile & Row Luxury Flagship project on London’s iconic Regent Street. In an era where physical retail must offer an “experience” to compete with digital platforms, the architectural and structural elements of a flagship store must do more than just hold inventory; they must elevate the brand’s narrative. Runda Rack was commissioned to engineer a bespoke retail display solution that could seamlessly integrate with the historical architecture of the Regent Street site while delivering the high-performance durability required for one of the world’s most visited shopping destinations. By deploying our Luxury S-Series Integrated Shelving, finished in a custom brushed champagne gold, we enabled Savile & Row to achieve a 30% increase in customer-product interaction rates. This case study details the engineering precision and aesthetic sensitivity required to deliver a museum-quality retail infrastructure in the heart of London’s luxury district.

The Client & Market Context

Savile & Row Luxury is a global icon of British tailoring and premium leather goods, known for its uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship. Their new flagship on Regent Street was designed to be their most ambitious retail expression to date, serving as a global benchmark for their brand identity. The London luxury market is characterized by extreme competition and high operational costs. To justify the premium real estate of Regent Street, the store had to achieve a high “sales-per-square-foot” ratio while maintaining a minimalist, “uncluttered” boutique feel. The market context also demanded a solution that could adapt to the rapid seasonal cycles of the fashion industry, requiring a display system that was both structurally permanent and infinitely reconfigurable. Savile & Row needed a partner who understood the “visual silence” required by luxury designers—where the racking system is so precisely engineered that it becomes nearly invisible, allowing the product to remain the sole focus.

The Challenge (Technical & Operational)

the Savile & Row project presented a series of complex technical challenges that bridged the gap between structural engineering and high-end interior design.

First, the “Invisible Strength” requirement was a major hurdle. The brand’s aesthetic favored ultra-thin, minimalist frames that appeared weightless. However, the technical reality of a flagship store meant these frames had to support the immense cumulative weight of heavy winter coats and luxury leather luggage—some sections requiring a load capacity of over 100kg per linear meter. Standard retail shelving was either too bulky, compromising the design, or too flimsy, posing a safety risk in a high-traffic environment.

Second, the Integration with Historical Architecture was a critical constraint. The Regent Street building features protected interior elements, meaning our racking system could not be anchored to certain walls or ceilings. Runda Rack had to engineer a “Self-Supporting Framework” that provided extreme lateral stability without relying on the building’s primary structure for support.

Third, High-Precision Lighting and Thermal Management for delicate materials were essential. The client required integrated LED lighting that offered a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 95+ to ensure the true colors of the bespoke fabrics were visible. However, traditional lighting generates heat that can damage sensitive leather and silk over time. We needed to engineer a thermal dissipation path within the steel frames to keep the products at room temperature.

Finally, Seasonal Reconfiguration Speed was non-negotiable. Store management needed to be able to transition from a “heavy-winter” layout with long hanging racks to a “summer-boutique” layout with glass shelving and flat-lay displays within a single overnight shift. This required a tool-free, high-granularity adjustment system that was simple enough for store staff to operate without calling in specialized contractors.

The Engineering Solution

Runda Rack delivered a bespoke application of our Luxury S-Series Integrated Shelving, customized specifically for the Savile & Row brand guidelines.

High-Tensile Slim-Profile Engineering: To achieve the minimalist look without sacrificing strength, we utilized a “Composite Steel-Alloy” framework. The uprights were engineered using high-strength Q345B steel but were cold-drawn into a slim 30mm x 30mm profile. We achieved the required load-bearing capacity by utilizing internal “tension rods” that reinforce the structure against bending. The entire system was finished in a “Brushed Champagne Gold” using a high-durability PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating. This finish is significantly more scratch-resistant than traditional plating or painting, ensuring the racks maintain their “new” look despite thousands of daily customer interactions.

Self-Supporting Architectural Framework: We engineered a “Bento-Box” structural logic, where the racking units are interconnected at the base and top using concealed horizontal stabilizers. This creates a unified, rigid grid that is physically independent of the building’s historical walls. The base plates were designed with “Micro-Adjustment Levelers” that allowed our installation team to compensate for the irregular, century-old floors of the Regent Street building, ensuring a perfectly plumb and level finish across the entire 15,000 square foot floor plate.

Integrated Thermal-Management Lighting: Runda Rack’s engineers designed a proprietary “Light-Track” system that is built directly into the underside of the S-Series shelf brackets. We utilized low-voltage 3000K LED strips with an integrated aluminum heat-sink channel. This channel is physically connected to the main steel uprights, allowing the racks themselves to act as a massive heat-dissipation array. This ensures that the LED surface temperature never exceeds 30 degrees Celsius, protecting the integrity of the delicate Savile & Row fabrics.

Tool-Free “Click-and-Lock” System: To solve the reconfiguration challenge, we developed a “Click-and-Lock” adjustment mechanism with a 12.5mm pitch. This allows store associates to move shelves or hanging rails vertically with a single hand-movement, without the use of screws or bolts. The electrical connection for the integrated lighting is managed through a “Contact-Rail” built into the uprights, meaning that when a shelf is moved, the lights automatically re-connect at the new position without the need for manual wiring.

Business Impact & ROI

The Savile & Row flagship has become a landmark of Regent Street retail, delivering a significant ROI through both brand elevation and operational efficiency.

Increased Sales Engagement: Store management reported a 30% increase in product interaction rates (customers touching or trying on items) in the six months post-opening. This is directly attributed to the improved product visibility provided by the integrated lighting and the “airy” feel of the minimalist racking system.

Operational Flexibility and Cost Savings: The “Click-and-Lock” system allowed the store to complete three seasonal layout transitions with zero external labor costs. This has resulted in an estimated annual saving of £50,000 in installation and maintenance fees.

Durability and Asset Protection: After 12 months of high-volume use, the PVD-coated brushed gold finish shows zero signs of “hanger-rash” or structural fatigue. The integrated thermal management has also resulted in a 95% reduction in “light-fade” damage to silk products, saving the brand thousands in inventory markdowns.

Industry Recognition: The Savile & Row flagship was awarded “Best Retail Interior Integration” by a leading architectural association, significantly enhancing the brand’s global prestige and setting a new standard for their international store rollout.

Sustainability & Future Proofing

Sustainability was a core component of the project, as Savile & Row sought to minimize the environmental impact of their flagship. The Runda Rack S-Series is 100% recyclable, and the PVD coating process is significantly more environmentally friendly than traditional electroplating. The high-efficiency LED system also contributed to the store achieving a high BREEAM rating for energy efficiency.

The modularity of the S-Series ensures that the Regent Street flagship is fully future-proof. As retail trends move towards “phygital” integration, the racking frames are already equipped with concealed pathways for RFID sensors and interactive digital screens. The “Universal-Mount” design ensures that as Savile & Row introduces new product categories — such as premium homeware or cosmetics — the racking can be upgraded with specialized inserts without requiring a full store renovation. This inherent flexibility protects the brand’s capital investment and ensures that their global flagship will remain at the cutting edge of luxury retail for decades to come.
